Gulfport base serves as hub for military to move supplies and personnel into Florida
The Air National Guard Base in Gulfport is serving as a hub for coordinating military efforts to move personnel and supplies to areas of Florida affected by Hurricane Irma.
Multiple state National Guards conducting relief flights are using the CRTC Battlefield Airmen Center as a base of operation. Since Monday there have been about a dozen trips between Gulfport and various parts of Florida.
Among those involved are members of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, who flew two Chinook helicopters to Jacksonville. The unit is based out of the Eastern Pennsylvania Army Training Site and specializes in hauling cargo and in rescue operations.
Nearly a dozen soldiers came directly to Gulfport from Texas where they were assisting with Hurricane Harvey.
