Gulfport Admirals two wins away from second straight trip to Pearl

For the second straight season, the class 6A playoffs run through Gulfport, just one year removed from its South State title. On the other side of the bracket is George County.

This will be one of the toughest pitching matchups the Admirals will have faced all season long with a Mississippi State commit and a South Alabama commit taking the ball in the first two games.

Gulfport is unphased behind the lead of Tulane signee Blake Johnson and a roster that features a heavy dose of state championship experience from 2017.

If anything, returning to South State finals narrows the focus for the ever-confident Admirals. Gulfport second baseman Patrick Nelms said, “We were expecting this the whole time and we’ve got a good team again so I think we can have a good shot at winning this year.”

Right hand pitcher Blake Johnson said, “Now it’s like okay, we don’t have to worry about our record, we don’t have to worry about anything else other than, there’s no like okay, we have to last the rest of the season. It’s at most six games, so it’s 100 percent from here on out.”

Gulfport Head Baseball Coach Jamie McMahon said, “Our guys have come out each day kind of expecting to get to this point. We learned how to win, and that’s one thing that’s hard to do in a high school situation. But our guys kind of know how to win and know what can get us to the end and we’ve gotten here and at this point, it’s anybody’s race.”

The Admirals and Rebels will lead things off from Gulfport at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
