Gulf Islands Waterpark is now open for the season

With the temperatures starting to rise as the summer months roll around, you can now cool off at Gulf Islands Waterpark.

The waterpark opened Saturday for the first time this season. Their opening was delayed due to the coronavirus safety restrictions from the state and city, resulting in about six weeks of lost revenue for the park, mostly from pre-season sales of season passes.

While Gulf Islands may be open to guests again, operating at 50 percent capacity, new guidelines and rules have been put in place by the park to insure the safety and health of visitors. Gulf Islands Waterpark General Manager Mark Moore said, “We had a lot to do in a very short amount of time. It usually takes two-and-a-half months to open the park. We did it in about two-and-a-half weeks. So very different time table, so you end up focusing on priorities and spreading queue lines out. The water slides, for example, now all the queue lines are on the ground rather than actually being on the tower. We have queue lines socially distanced throughout the park. We’ve moved most our food and beverage operation to online ordering, so that’s one less line you have to stand in. So it’s just that type of thinking throughout our operation of how do we get people every to come and have a good time and stay spread out.”
