Groundbreaking for Solar Facility at the Seabee Base

Leaders at the Naval Construction Battalion Center teamed up with Mississippi Power to break ground on a 23-acre solar facility on the Gulfport base.
The large scale solar facility will be able to produce four megawatts of direct current or three megawatts of alternating current power. Officials tell News 25 this will benefit security and operations and will produce a more efficient way to use energy for those who live and work on base. Commanding Officer Captain Cheryl Hansen said, “We are very happy to be at this point where we are breaking ground on this project. It’s a combination of a couple of years of planning for a project from inception to actually getting it in the ground and getting it started. We’re very excited to see this day come.”
The base also received the Secretary of the Navy 2015 Energy Award at this morning’s ceremony.
