GRAPHIC: Multiple cats reportedly shot by blowgun darts in Poplarville
Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers and Poplarville Police are asking for the public’s help to identify those involved in shooting cats with darts from a blowgun.
As a warning, the graphic images shown will be of animal cruelty.
Since May 2018, three cats have been struck by yellow darts about four to five inches long with an arrow on the end. All three cats have survived their injuries.
Two Poplarville residents also reported finding similar darts on their properties and they’ve said their cats are missing.
Under Mississippi’s animal cruelty law that was signed in 2020, individuals accused of animal cruelty can be charged with a felony.
If acts of animal cruelty are committed against more than one animal, each act counts as a separate offense. Animal Welfare Advocate Brenda Nirenberg said, “Maybe this is all overblown and it’s just a kid out thinking he’s having fun shooting cats, but why take the chance? This person is likely capable of community violence and maybe showing up at a gathering with a weapon that’s much more lethal than a blow dart.”
Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,500 for tips that lead to an arrest. If you have any information on these crimes call 1-877-787-5898.
