Giving Tuesday: Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast
Thanksgiving may be behind us, but that doesn’t mean people are done with the spirit of giving.
After the Black Friday lines disappear and the shipments for Cyber Monday are confirmed, organizations like The Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast aim to bring attention to giving Tuesday. The Boys and Girls Club Director of Resource Development and Marketing Tori Bishop said, “The focus for giving Tuesday is to support what you love. Obviously, it’s an important day for nonprofits, but I believe it’s just really about giving back. That’s the national and actually worldwide focus of the campaign.”
The club is encouraging people on the Coast to #giveback by donating money to help sponsor membership fees for 25 children in 2018. The Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast gives children a safe place to learn and grow after school. By sponsoring a child you’re giving them access to a variety of programs, like the Stride Academy. Eight-year-old Jacque Hartzog said, “Like I’ll log-in with a third grade password and I can go to math, language, social studies, or science.”
One hundred percent of teens in the club graduate from high school on time and one hundred percent of third graders pass the state mandated reading exams. Staff members say by sponsoring a kid, you’re not just giving back, you have a hand in building a future. Boys and Girls Gulf Coast Program Instructor Linda Lizana said, “It targets youngsters, young people, and they’re our future. If we invest in them, we’re investing in our own future.”
It’s $104 a month to sponsor a kid, so around $1,250 a year. Any donation the club receives from now until December 31st will go toward the campaign.
