Gilley’s Honky Tonk Grill Opens in Downtown Gulfport

There is a new bar and grill in downtown Gulfport. News 25’s Shelby Myers visited Gilley’s Honky Tonk Grill, named after the famous country musician Mickey Gilley, and tells us why a unique kind of entertainment is here on the Coast.
If you’re a fan of the popular movie “Urban Cowboy” and country music legend Mickey Gilley then there’s a new stop in Gulfport for you. Gilley’s Honky Tonk Grill was named after, and even blessed by, Mickey Gilley. Owner Stephen Barnette said, “Mickey invited us out to Pasadena where we met with him. Had the opportunity to explain or go over what it was we were hoping to do and the image that we wanted to project for his business and he gave us his blessings.”
The image Stephen and his father, Gary, want to portray is one which celebrates Gilley’s career through memorabilia like the mechanical bull from the original Gilley’s Club in Texas. “He also brought over about 50 or 60 8X10 photographs of himself with other celebrities, country musicians and folks in his industry,” said Barnette.
Barnette was born and raised in Gulfport, he moved away for a couple of years and now he says he’s back to promote growth in the town he loves. As businesses and restaurants continue to pop up in downtown Gulfport, Barnette says he hopes Gilley’s will bring even more people to the area. “Hopefully, we can help bring business down, not only for our business, but also to help the other businesses and merchants that are in the area.”
He’s not the only one. Longtime residents Sherry and Don Alfonso say they do their best to support Gulfport eateries and they hope to see more people in downtown Gulfport do the same.
Gilley’s Honky Tonk Grill serves southern American food like burgers and steaks. The grill also features an outdoor stage for live music.
