George Ohr Birthday Celebration

The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art celebrated one of its namesakes in style over the weekend.

George Ohr’s 126nd birthday celebration featured free admission for attendees to tour and explore the museum. Also known as the ‘Mad Potter,’ Ohr was a pioneer in ceramic art during his life.

A steampunk pottery performance by artist Steve Barney and individualized pottery lessons served as a fun time for attendees and a tribute to Ohr’s work in pottery. Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art Marketing and Public Relations Director Nathen Lytle said, “He was also an extremely important person to ceramic art. He was considered abstract expressionist before that movement really became a thing. So, he was a very important potter.”

George Ohr died in 1918 at the age of 60.
