George County asking public’s help to identify suspects in attempted ATM theft
The George County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s help to identify suspects in connection with an attempted theft of an ATM in Benndale.
Sheriff Keith Havard said in a press release that on Saturday about 1:45 a.m., deputies responded to the Benndale Superstore on Highway 26 for a report of attempted ATM theft and shots fired.
The caller told dispatch that they saw the suspects trying to rob the ATM and pulled into the parking lot. That’s when the suspect vehicle, a white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado with no tailgate and a Mississippi license plate of FR12443, left on Highway 26 headed toward Wiggins.
The witness tried to follow the vehicle, but someone in the Silverado fired shots.
Through further investigation, GCSO investigators identified one suspect, the owner of the vehicle, as Joe Howard McLeod, 34, possibly of McLain. McLeod is described as a black male, approximately 6-foot-6 and weighing around 185 pounds. McLeod has brown eyes and black hair that he may be wearing in braids. McLeod has ties to both the McLain and Louisiana.
Two other suspects have not been fully identified at this time, but are described as a black female and a black male. The female is believed to be from the Louisiana as well.
George County Justice Court has issued a warrant for McLeod for grand larceny. Investigators do consider him to be armed and dangerous. If you see this individual or know his whereabouts, please contact your local authorities.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information concerning this or any other crime is encouraged to contact the George County Sheriff’s Office at 601-947-4811.
