Free employee garden at Scarlet Pearl Casino

One local casino is taking big steps to make their employees lives better and they are doing it in an unconventional way.

The Scarlet Pearl Casino is not taking a gamble with their employees’ health. One of the steps they are taking is planting a community garden. Scarlet Pearl Vice President of HR Donna Hight said, “We have our free vegetable garden here. One of our employees suggested that, as he has had some health issues. And he said, ‘Hey it would be really nice if we had some vegetables to take home to our family.’ We were like, “Oh, that’s a fabulous idea.’ So we just took it and ran with it.”

For employees like Karri Holmes, who has four children to feed, this community garden is a game changer. “So in this day and age, with fast food being so convenient, this will be quick and easy.”

It may not seem like much right now, but in just a few short weeks, employees will be able to pick a variety of fruits and vegetables, all free of charge. “It will save and cut down on expensive organics, you really can’t get any more organic than this, and it will be such a convenience and I love it.”

The employees can volunteer to be on the Green Team and maintain the garden. “It is essentially for us, by us. That means that we will be out here pruning, watering, and taking care of the garden.”

The casino plans to continue the garden year round and they will be changing vegetables each season.
