Fourth annual Senior Summer Barbecue

Seniors from all over South Mississippi came out to enjoy the beautiful weather today at Jones Park in Gulfport for the 4th annual Senior Summer Barbecue.

The seniors worked up an appetite by walking laps around Jones Park for Mississippi Access to Care’s first Mac Mile before enjoying a meal under the Barksdale Pavilion put on by Boyington Health and Rehabilitation Center and the City of Gulfport.

Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson showed off his barbecuing skills, grilling up hamburgers and hotdogs for the seniors as they enjoyed beautiful weather, good music, dancing, and health resources. Kristyn Gunter with Southern Mississippi Planning and Development District said, “We think anything that gets our seniors active is a good opportunity and this is a prime beautiful day here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to get everybody out and about and enjoy the sunshine.”

One resident said, “That was a cool walk. I loved it. I’ve never walked this before and this is awesome.”

The annual barbecue is a free event open to seniors 55 and older.
