Former USM Head Coach Jay Hopson joining Mississippi State staff

After resigning from his post as Southern Miss head football coach just one game into the 2020 season, Jay Hopson already has a new place to call home in the Magnolia State.

As first reported by 24/7 Sports, Hopson is heading to Mississippi State to join Mike Leach’s staff as a defensive analyst.

Hopson spent four full seasons in Hattiesburg, starting in 2016, leading the Golden Eagles to three bowl games and an overall record of 28-23.

A graduate of Ole Miss, Hopson has now coached at five in-state schools including USM and MSU as well as Ole Miss, Alcorn State, and Delta State.

The staff opening was made possible by the retirement of Brad Peterson, although he held a different position.

Between USM and Alcorn, Hopson has an overall head coaching record of 60-40.
