Former Major League Baseball player to host camp in Gulfport

Fred Lewis and other former Major League Baseball players are coming together to host the second annual Big League Youth Baseball Fundamentals Camp.

Lewis went to Stone High School before attending Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, alongside Harrison Central alum Matt Lawton, who also went to MGCCC.

The camp is a free one-day youth event for ages five through 12 hosted at the Gulfport Sportsplex on January 21st from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is open through January 9th.

Lewis says this is his way of giving back to the community and hopes to motivate others who love baseball to follow their dreams. “I was gifted with so much information on my way up to the major league and I wanted to give back because I had a scout that told me, ‘Hey, make sure that you tell somebody else what you learned on the way because this is what we are looking for.”

For registration, you can email RSims@Gulfport-MS.GOV.
