Former Gulfport Fire Chief James White passes away
The Gulfport Fire Department family is mourning the loss of one of their own. Former Fire Chief James White passed away earlier this week.
Chief White began his career with the department in 1965. Just under 20 years later, he came to lead the department in 1984 as chief.
Chief White retired in 1990, but came out of retirement to serve as Gulfport’s fire chief for three more years from 1998 until 2001.
Current Gulfport Chief Mike Beyerstedt says White is already missed. “James was a great guy and a wonderful leader. More importantly than that he was just a tremendous person. He did a lot of great things here for our department. He was kind of a leader in the implementation of emergency medical service delivery through the fire department. He was humble in my dealings with him. Just a gentleman. That’s something I would like to keep with me and remember James by. Just what a good person he was.”
Funeral services for Chief White were held today.
