Firemen battle flames and heat in Long Beach attic fire

Flames and smoke fill a Long Beach home after a fire in the attic.

Long Beach Fire Department received a call of a structure fire around 2 this afternoon. Arriving on scene at Railroad Street and McCaughan Avenue, behind the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus, firefighters found flames erupting in the attic.

According to Long Beach Fire Chief Griff Skellie, the home appears to be undergoing a renovation.

Firefighters were not only battling fire from the flames, but heat from what feels like triple digit weather temperatures. “We have to be real careful with the heat. (It is really hot, talk to me about how you guys are functioning in this heat wave, not only with this fire, but with other fires that are happening.) Well, you just have to be very aware of hydration. We were lucky enough to have AMR on scene with us today. They were shuttling cold water to the guys, very helpful. We’re very appreciative of it.”

There are no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
