Firefighters remember fallen heroes

First responders put their lives on the line every day to protect our community. The Coast will always remember the two heroic firefighters who died in a house fire on this day 31 years ago.
News 25’s Gina Tomlinson takes us to a special ceremony that was held this morning.
Firefighters bowed heads and family members held close remembering two fallen heroes in Biloxi. Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney said, “These guys gave up their lives. They gave the supreme sacrifice for their communities.”
Kurt Jacquet Sr. and Carl Ohr died battling a house fire on Reynold Street October 20th, 1986. Biloxi Fire Chief Joe Boney tells News 25 it was a day he’ll never forget. “One of the firefighters got in trouble. The other one wouldn’t leave him and a room flash killed both of them. In fact, they were both found holding one another in their arms.”
Tears were shed during group prayers and flowers were placed at both of the two grave sites, Carl Ohr’s wife Rosella says the best time of her life were her 14 years married to Carl before his death. “He just loved life and wanted to help people and that’s what we loved the most.”
Having a father as a firefighter, Rosella says she knew the risk that comes along with the job, but nothing prepared her for the day she lost her husband 31 years ago. “It’s an event that can take your life and no one can control it.”
The heroic deaths of these two men serve as a reminder of the dangers that firefighters face every day on the job and to firefighters it is a lesson as to how they can better protect their own lives. Chief Boney said, “We had groups do investigations on their death and we learned a lot. We now have personal alert systems on every firefighter.”
Firefighters hold the ceremony every year to remember the brave men who lost their lives. “It means that much to them to come out here and take a few minutes to recognize their sacrifice and what they gave for their community,” said Chief Boney.
