Bay St. Louis Firefighter Pay Raise Dispute

Unapproved pay raises for Bay St. Louis firefighters has become quite the source of contention between city councilmen and the mayor.
Several firefighters received about a $1.25 an hour pay raise without the approval of City Council. The issue came up during a meeting held to discuss the $289,000 shortfall the city will soon face.
Tonight, the council, the mayor and the new city comptroller discussed possible ways to amend the budget in order to reinstate the pay raises legally. Mayor Les Fillingame said, “We’ve just had a little bit of turnover in the fire department and they try very hard to utilize part time help to fill in some of the shift work in the fire department that allows us a little bit more flexibility within the budget compensation to award the guys for the things that they accomplish.”
No decisions were made during tonight’s meeting. Mayor Fillingame tells News 25 the raises shouldn’t have been implemented without the council’s approval but says the department is more than worthy of a pay increase.
