Fire destroys Gulfport nursing home

Eight months of renovations to an elderly facility in Gulfport is destroyed by an overnight fire on Hardy Avenue.
Eighteen firefighters battled the blaze around 1 a.m., but the inside of the home was destroyed. The homeowner tells News 25 the two story structure fit 14 rooms and four bathrooms and just needed a few finishing touches with decorations.
Even though it is devastating to see the destruction of the building, contractors say the outcome could have been worse. Contractor Henry Stephens said, “We finally reached a point when it was almost completed, like 96 percent and then this nightmare happened last night. It could have been worse, but thanks to the neighbor and her quick reactions calling the fire department, they responded professionally, came up here, kicked down the door, and took care of business. It saved most of the property.”
No one was inside at the time so there were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
