Fire Destroys Gulfport Home

A mother and daughter are lucky to be alive after a house fire in Gulfport this afternoon.
Flames ripped through the home on Gary Street just off of Highway 49 around 2 this afternoon. The couple who lives in the home was away while authorities say their daughter and granddaughter were inside.
The daughter was cooking with grease and walked to the bathroom. When she returned, the kitchen was on fire. Authorities say she took her baby and went to a neighbor’s to call 9-1-1.
Gulfport Fire Deputy Chief Kevin Lundy tells News 25 the home is a complete loss and so is a car that was parked in the garage, but no one was injured. Nancy, who lives nearby, said,”And I seen the old lady come out of her house and I said ‘ok something’s on fire’ because I kept seeing the smoke getting thicker and thicker. So, I turned back around. I seen it look like she went to a next door neighbor house, like the back door, and beat on the door and an old white man came out and then I turned back around and I was trying to play with my phone to get it to dial 9-1-1 but when I turned back around and made it to here, somebody else had already called them.”
The Red Cross was on the scene and tells News 25 that they will take care of the family. The family was renting the home from a nearby neighbor who says there is insurance on the home.
