Woods fire near residential area in Jackson County

Tense moments for some residents in Ocean Springs today as a woods fire grew out of control.

The Forestry Commission and Central Jackson County Fire and Rescue crews battled a blaze that claimed 110 to 120 acres of land.

Authorities had to evacuate residents on Holiday Drive and Riley Road. No property was damaged or lost.

The flames are under control now, but units are still in the area monitoring smoke to ensure things remain contained.

Central Jackson County Fire Chief Michael Belton believes the blaze started in Ocean Springs into the county.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
