Female bass fishing team from D’Iberville receive scholarships

Ladies and lures has been a winning combination for the D’Iberville High School bass fishing team as two of its female members have accumulated several accolades including college scholarships.

D’Iberville High School sophomore Leslie Redding and junior Anna Hokamp have been reeling in some big things lately and not all of them have been fish.

The two teenage anglers were both awarded college scholarships to Simpson University in California this afternoon to continue their fishing careers at the next level.

The duo undoubtedly caught the eyes of schools when they placed fifth in the female team category this past June at the High School World Bass Fishing Championships. Redding said, “I cried a little bit, but it was surprising because we’re the only two girls that are on a team and everybody else boy-boy or boy-girl, so it was just an exciting moment for me.”

Hokamp said “But just to know it’s just me and her, it’s pretty good cause we’re outdoing the boys. That’s all the matters.”

Currently, Hokamp and Redding are the second-best high school angler team in the entire state of Mississippi that’s also including the boy’s teams. The female duo have placed first in their last two competitions. Fishers of Men High School Series National Director Richard Parker said, “They competed against some of the top anglers in the Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. And the reason I say the top anglers is because these same anglers are making the top 50 in the world.”

Not only are Redding and Hokamp making a name for themselves in the bass fishing world, they’re also making a name for all women in the sport. “I want them to be able to look up to me and know that girls can do anything.”

DHS Bass Fishing Team Director Steven Ramsey said, “They’re showing young ladies hey, this is not just a male sport, you have a place in this.”

All their successes and accomplishments aside, these two dominating anglers still have plenty of fun. “When we’re on the boat it’s very silly and we play around.”

“We have good trips going to places and coming back and just cracking up. The boat rides, everything. It’s really wonderful.”

Redding and Hokamp will be back on the water competing February 20th in Biloxi.
