Family of WWI Hero Receives Awards
A Biloxi family received military service awards earned by their loved who served in World War I.
Senator Thad Cochran’s staff presented Francis Ward with the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart and Fourragere earned by his father in combat. Cochran’s officials worked with the Department of the Army to help recover Frank Ward’s medals from a century ago as part of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe.
His son, Francis, tells News 25 these medals have a special place in his heart. “It’s one of the greatest honors of my life, it is. I’ll cherish the thoughts and remembrance of him and when I go, it’ll be passed down to the appropriate people in our family.”
Francis Ward also served in the military and is a veteran of the United States Navy.
