East Central football making history
When it comes to undefeated teams, it’s safe to say they’re usually having one of the better seasons in program history if not the best.
That’s certainly the case for East Central in 2017 less than 48 hours out from the school’s biggest football game ever. Three playoff wins later, the Hornets are still a perfect 12-0 heading into Friday’s South State final versus unbeaten Poplarville.
The two schools have been on a collision course all season long, but this is unchartered territory for East Central. Whereas Poplarville won the South State crown in 2016, this is by far and away the best season East Central has ever had.
Head Coach Seth Smith is leading his Hornets past the second round for the first time in school history, making this holiday season an extra special time in Hurley. “Well Thank God, what a blessing to be practicing over Thanksgiving. It makes it even easier to be thankful. It’s something we’ve talked about all year, but you’ve got to take it one game at a time. And this is a rare opportunity, so any time you get these opportunities you don’t want them to pass by without appreciating them and we definitely appreciate it.”
Tight end Brad Cumbest said, “It’s very special, I mean we’re the first ones to ever make it to a South State title game. So I really appreciate that.”
Running back Tony Brown said, “After we made it past the second round, we’ve just, it’s just unbelievable. I don’t even know how to put it into words. It’s great.”
Defensive Coordinator David Hudson said, “Growing up here, being a part of all of this since I was in first grade, what these kids have done is just amazing and seeing the fruits of their labor is wild.”
East Central will make the trek to the Hornet’s Nest out in Poplarville for Friday’s 7 p.m. kickoff.
