Doubling inmate costs at Harrison County Jail

The growing number of inmates and the increase of costs at the jail are causing problems for Harrison County officials.
Conversation heated up at the Harrison County Board of Supervisors meeting earlier today when jail fees became the subject of discussion. The supervisors voted to double the amount of money Harrison County cities pay per inmate last week.
The decision was for cities to go from $25 a day to $50 a day. Local police didn’t have a say in the prior decision and came to the board meeting to voice their opinion on the matter. Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said, “Our concern is it’s not just a budget issue, but it is a public safety concern. People demand a quality life and a key resource we utilize in incarceration is looking at a doubling of the price. I understand it being an issue and we need to talk about it. That’s what needs to happen.”
The supervisors voted to relook at the issue and the board has plans to discuss the matter later this week with city officials.
