Dolphin Released in Gulfport
IMMS in collaboration with NOAA, DMR, Gulfport fire departments dive team, and Mississippi State University’s veterinary college rescued and released a dolphin yesterday that was stranded for 3 weeks in a bayou in Henderson Point, Pass Christian. The animal was out of habitat, and it became apparent that it could not leave the bayou on its own and the cold water temperatures and low salinity could be detrimental to the health of the dolphin. The dolphin was an approximately 2 year old female and was provided with a satellite tag to track its movement and monitor its survival. Prior to release various biological samples were taken to assess the health of the dolphin.
