DNA evidence leads to arrest of Picayune man in connection to 1998 brutal murder of 91-year-old woman

PICAYUNE, Miss. (WXXV) — A Picayune man has been arrested in connection to a decades-old cold case that was reopened in October of last year.

Capt. Rhonda Johnson with the Picayune Police Department tells WXXV 47-year-old Sergio Williams was arrested Sunday evening and charged with the murder of 91-year-old Leola Jordan.

June 30 will mark 23 years since Leola Jordan’s death.

Police say the elderly woman suffered from numerous stab wounds, but nothing appeared to have been stolen from her Washington Street home.

Investigators with the Picayune Police Department and the FBI reviewed past witness statements and evidence collected at the scene.

Just two months ago, DNA evidence from the scene was sent to a modern testing facility in collaboration with the television show “Cold Justice” on the Oxygen network.

Capt. Rhonda Johnson says the investigation is still ongoing.

Williams is being held in the Millard Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
