D’Iberville Middle School special needs teen scores first touchdown

A much-loved special needs Warrior in D’Iberville is enjoying his new fame after he scored a touchdown during the middle school’s game against Ocean Springs.

Eighth grader Tyler Hunter made WXXV’s Play of the Day when he made the 30-yard touchdown.

Both teams had set up the play and both sides of the stadium went wild when he reached the endzone.

Before the game, the Warriors’ Head Coach Mike Wilson spoke to the Ocean Springs coach about Tyler, who has become an accepted fixture among the boys.

Wilson said both teams cooperated and came together to make a moment Tyler will long remember. “He’s just absolutely the life of the school. He’s always got a smile on his face. I’ve never seen him when he was not happy. He comes in and gives you a hug. He’s always throwing footballs in the gym. Same thing out here. All the kids here, they’ve just taken him in as kind of one of their own and so, you know, they watch for him and protect him, and so he’s had a good time.”

The D’Iberville Middle School Warriors play their final game Thursday night against St. Martin Middle School.
