D’Iberville High teacher buys recycling bins with Mississippi Power grant

D’Iberville High School teacher Evelyn McQueen is using a grant to go green courtesy of Mississippi Power.

Earlier this year, Mississippi Power presented McQueen with an environmental grant and she used that money to purchase recycling bins for the school.

She bought bins for classrooms, the teacher’s lounge, and other offices in which they managed to recycle more than 3,200 pounds of materials in the month of February.

McQueen’s students, also known as ‘Eco Warriors,’ tell News 25 about the purpose of the program. Eco Warriors Club President Alivia Duplessis said, “Right now, it is just crazy to see how much we’ve grown in like one and a half years. Really, I want to see how much they can grow in the future, how we can get even younger kids than us like D’Iberville Middle School involved. Maybe hopefully them starting to separate out the recycle bowls into more and more bins.”

This is the fifth year Mississippi Power has distributed environmental education grants.

Grants have been used to fund approximately 200 environmental-related projects in the company’s service territory.
