Diamondhead holding special election for mayor position

The Diamondhead City Council ordered a special election for September 15th to fill the position for mayor.

All registered voters can cast their ballot and voting will take place at the Diamondhead Community Center.

If you’re interested in becoming Diamondhead’s mayor you can pick up an application at the city clerk’s office or online at the secretary of state’s website.

The application must be turned in in-person at the city clerk’s office. The deadline is August 26th at 5 p.m.  The application requires 50 signatures of qualifying electors.

Diamondhead’s previous mayor, Tommy Schafer, passed away over two weeks ago from surgery complications. Diamondhead City Clerk Jeannie Klein said, “Mayor Schafer’s passing was truly a shock to us all. His absence will be a void for many years to come. He loved the City of Diamondhead and he was proud to work for the citizens. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family at this time.”

Mayor Schafer holds the title of being the first mayor of Diamondhead. He was first elected in 2013 and re-elected for a second term in 2017.
