Department Of Marine Resources Announced Plans to Build a Pier to Deer Island

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Deer Island, but haven’t had transportation, your troubles will soon be over.
Today, the secretary of state and the Department of Marine Resources shared details to build a pier that will give everyone access to this historic barrier island

As for any development on the island, Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said, “well, when you look at the dynamics of people coming here, everybody has a different interest. Some will want to gamble, some will want to play golf, some will want to go to the baseball stadium, and some will want to go to the island. So, what you want to do is have a smorgasbord, a cafeteria for every family.”
Work is slated to get underway in about a month. “Walters Diving and Marine have a long history of work on the coast here. They’re from Pascagoula. They have about 30 years of experience doing this type of work. So, in this case, we’ve got a good contractor with a good track record, so we’ve got a lot of confidence,” said Director of the Department of Marine Resources Jamie Miller.
Now that Walters Diving and Marine have been chosen as the company to construct the pier, the next step is to find a company to transport people from here over there to Deer Island.
“You’ll see it very shortly, in about two weeks. And we’ll ask for people to come in and sit down with us. How would you deliver it? And they’ll be to transport people back and forth. I expect the transport fee to be very minimal,” said Hosemann.
The pier is expected to be complete in six months.
