DeBerry Earns Second Southern League Pitcher of the Week Honor After Historic Shutout
Another week, another honor for Biloxi Shuckers right-handed pitcher Jaron DeBerry. DeBerry has been named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season following a dominant outing against the Columbus Clingstones on Saturday.
The award comes on the heels of a historic performance in which DeBerry tossed his first complete-game shutout in the minor leagues. The seven-inning gem marked just the 11th complete-game shutout in Biloxi Shuckers franchise history. DeBerry was nearly untouchable throughout the contest, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters over all seven innings. His efficient and commanding performance helped secure the victory while adding another milestone to an already impressive season.
Over his last four starts, DeBerry has posted a 2.77 ERA with 31 strikeouts and only seven walks, showcasing both his swing-and-miss ability and command on the mound. Prior to Sunday’s game, DeBerry reflected on receiving the honor and discussed what it means to be part of the Shuckers organization.
“Obviously personal accolades are really cool, but this is a winning ball club and a winning organization as a lot of people are seeing over the past few years, so it just kind of one of those things where we’re expected to win ball games,” Jaron DeBerry said. “It’s really cool when it happens in that fashion, but a lot of credit goes to a lot of the team. It wasn’t my highest punch out game, so there were a lot of plays made behind me and especially to think of it as a one-hitter, it shows that the defense was really working behind me. At the end of the day, we’re just trying to win ball games, so I’m happy I was able to set them up for success and give us the win.”
The Biloxi Shuckers are home the rest of the week, so head down to Keesler Federal Park as DeBerry is expected to get another start! Congratulations to Jaron on the honor!
