CTA Enters Lease Agreement for Transit Center

Coast Transit Authority is excited to bring new life to the abandoned downtown library in Gulfport.
Today, they entered into a 40 year lease agreement to take over the site and turn the building into a new intermodal transit center.
Eighty percent of the $7.5 million project will be funded by the Federal Transit Association. The remaining 20 percent will come from the city.
CTA leaders say they plan to restore the building while maintaining its historic value. CTA Executive Director Kevin Coggin said, “CTA buses are going to be operating out of there. We’re going to handle charter buses coming to the Mississippi Aquarium, school buses. There’s going to be a nice pedestrian mall. We’re going to have a bike share there. It’s going to be a very active center. We’re really happy to be in a position to support the Mississippi Aquarium.”
CTA says they expect to go into designing and engineering the building in October. They hope to have it finished shortly before the aquarium opens.
