In the wake of her tragic death, family and friends of Gulf Coast native and Food Network Star contestant Cristie Schoen are seeking to honor her memory as an animal lover through donations to the Humane Society of South Mississippi (H.S.S.M.), located in Gulfport, MS. Donations can be made directly to “Cristie’s Fund” at

Cristie Schoen, 38, was co-owner of Tree Hugger Catering, renowned for her signature green smoothie served in a mason jar on many a movie set. She was proud owner to two dogs, Sidney and Hunter, whom she cared for as if they were her children—cooking them dinner, ensuring they had entertainment while she was out, and making sure they got their exercise on a daily basis.

"Cristie loved her dogs, Sidney and Hunter with all of her heart. Donations made in her honor will help dogs and animals to get the extra love and care they need,” said Tree Hugger Catering co-owner Dirk Long, “Cristie would be so touched by the outpouring of love and grand gestures to support the Humane Society of South Mississippi in her memory."

Cristie’s family and friends are asking for donations to H.S.S.M., located in Gulfport, MS in lieu of flowers as a gesture to honor her memory. Cristie’s family was proud to be from the South and she called the Mississippi Gulf Coast home for many years. Donations can be made online at or through the mail at Humane Society of South Mississippi, ATT: Cristie’s Fund, 2615 25th Avenue, Gulfport MS 39501.

H.S.S.M. cares for nearly 8,000 homeless pets each year. H.S.S.M. provides low-cost spay/neuter services to the public. H.S.S.M. works tirelessly to end the unnecessary euthanasia of pets in the Mississippi Gulf Coast community and depends on contributions for support of its lifesaving programs.

“We are honored that Cristie’s family would think of our organization during such a difficult time,” said H.S.S.M. Donor Relations Manager Brittany Chowske, “But for a passionate animal lover, donations to a charity like ours can be a wonderful way to honor someone’s memory.”
