COVID-19 causes blood shortages; American Red Cross hosting blood drives
Over the last few weeks the American Red Cross has lost hundreds of thousands of blood donations due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Red Cross is now in desperate need of blood and officials say they are taking extra precautions and practicing social distancing during their blood drives.
This Wednesday, there will be a community blood drive at the Spin Room and Fitness on Highway 49. The drive is being held at this location due to its space and it gives the Red Cross the ability to practice social distancing. Denise Smith with the American Red Cross said, “It is essential right now and we are doing essential business by setting up these blood drives and having people come donate. Donations are down right now obviously with different schools and other areas all over having to cancel blood drives. So there is definitely a need right now.”
The Spin Room is located at 12100 Highway 49 and runs until 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday. Papa John’s will be donating free pizza to anyone who gives a pint of blood.
