Coroner identifies body found in toolbox in Pearl River County

A man whose remains were found in a truck toolbox in rural Pearl River County has been identified.

Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said the victim is 24-year-old Seth Colter Odom of Poplarville.

The body was found about 10 a.m. Saturday on the embankment of a creek on Burge and Reyer Road in the north part of the county.

Passersby saw the toolbox from a bridge over the creek and went to investigate. That’s when they discovered the body and called authorities.

“To preserve the evidence,  we transferred the box and the body to the state crime lab,” Turnage said. We were able to identify him through his tattoos using social media and confirmed it through Pearl River County jail records.”

Turnage also said fingerprints taken were returned Tuesday and also confirmed the ID. The autopsy was completed Tuesday and revealed the cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Turnage said Odom was known to law enforcement agencies in the area and had not been reported missing. He had been dead about a week.

Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office would not comment on the case, saying the investigation is ongoing.
