Controlled Fire Rolling Through Deer Island

If you see some smokes over the Mississippi Sound today don’t be alarmed….it’s a prescribed burn on Deer Island. The DMR is planning to conduct the burn on a 41 acre section on the eastern end of Deer Island in an effort to clear a portion on the land that has not rebounded since hurricane Katrina. The burn could last up to four hours, but you could see smoke for several days as the trees continue to smolder. DMR officials are asking you stay clear of the eastern side of the island for at least a week as dead trees could give way and fall after the burn is complete.
