Conference USA Tournament: No. 1 Southern Miss vs. No. 5 La Tech

The Conference USA Baseball Tournament resumed at MGM Park today and Southern Miss needed a win to stay alive. Last night, the Golden Eagles dropped their first game to UTSA, making today’s game vs. Louisiana Tech a win or go home scenario.
USM played like it right out of the gates. The Black and Gold landed their big punch in the top of the second as Matthew Guidry launched a three run homer out to deep right center that gave the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish.
Kirk McCarty gave up just two runs across seven innings and Nick Sandlin shut the door with four strikeouts in a two-inning save.
A big sigh of relief for the Conference USA regular season champions, who win it by the count of 5-2. Second baseman Matthew Guidry said, “Oh, well I mean the train has already started. We just left the station. So I mean when we get to having that swag, we were bound to lose at some point.”
Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “”It’s like taking a final exam, man. Get it over. You study, get it over. And that’s what it was this morning. I wanted to get back on that field, get back on that bull and ride that dude. And we had a tough one to ride today. Their guys did a great job of keeping our offense down, but our guys responded early and did what it took to win the baseball game in the end.”
The Golden Eagles play the loser of UTSA and Charlotte tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
