Conference USA Tournament Media Day
After calling Hattiesburg home for three seasons, the Conference USA Baseball Tournament made its way down to Biloxi for the first time in 2017.
It turned out to be a gleaming success with championship Sunday drawing a record crowd of more than 5,200 fans.
Starting tomorrow, the eight-team double-elimination event is back for year two at MGM Park with sights set on doing it even bigger and better in 2018.
Tonight, Overtime Sports hosted a media day at Margaritaville Resort Biloxi where representatives from those eight programs took part in a little meet-and-greet.
Albeit a friendly way to get the week started, these coaches say it’s all business come time for first pitch tomorrow. USM Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “Well, there are eight of us right here that are trying to get our teams to the finish line to win on Sunday where you’re one of 31 teams that are guaranteed for an NCAA regional bid. And I think that’s the important thing, we all recognize that what has been done prior to now is over. Even ourself, we won the regular season championship but that’s gone. That’s over. And a new challenge for everybody exists now.”
Louisiana Tech Head Baseball Coach Lane Burroughs said, “I know three of our clubs are right there, we need to make some noise to continue playing past this week. We know what position we’re in, and I think our guys will be ready. I mean it is postseason baseball and I always say if you’ve got to get them pumped up and give a speech and turn tables over this time of year to get them ready to play, maybe you’ve got the wrong pulse of your team.”
The tournament gets started bright and early at 9 a.m. tomorrow, starting with FIU and Florida Atlantic. Southern Miss will take the diamond at 4 p.m. barring weather delays.
