Conference USA asking for financial relief
Conference USA is in the headlines this week for a couple different reasons, both Coronavirus related.
For one, the league is one of five major football conferences that acted in unison by sending a letter to the NCAA on behalf of all 350 Division I schools. The letter is dated April 10th by league commissioners of the American Athletic Conference, Mountain West Conference, Mid-American Conference, Sun Belt Conference, and C-USA.
It’s purpose is requesting a more relaxed standard to compete in Division I for four years including the number of sports a school must sponsor which is currently 16.
The leagues are also looking for the NCAA to lift rules regarding the minimum amount of grant-in aid given to athletes, average football attendance, and the minimum number of total and home games played.
Secondly, C-USA is reportedly in talks over adjusting its league scheduling methods and the possibility of going to two divisions. As of now, football and softball are the only sports that have east and west division.
