Community leaders push to get more people vaccinated

Memorial Hospital held a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination distribution at Katie Patterson Booth Community Center to help get more people vaccinated within the Gulfport community.

According to Mississippi Department of Health, only 36 percent of total doses have been administered to African Americans. To help encourage more minorities to get vaccinated, community leaders came together to set up vaccination events to make it quicker and easier for those interested in getting the vaccine.

Ward 3 Councilwoman Ella Holmes Hines tells News 25 although the turnout was low, those that received the vaccination did their part.  “The access is much easier. What we have to do now that we have broken the barrier on where the location is, we are going to have to continue to educate that it is important to get your vaccination and do it before this fall of the delta variants. I think that’s going to make a big difference in the community.”

Another vaccination event will take place on Saturday, June 19th at Henry Beck Park in Biloxi from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
