Community cleanup honoring Black History Month Saturday in Gulfport

Saturday in Gulfport, ‘Extend a Hand, Help a Friend’ is hosting a community clean up commemorating the last weekend of Black History Month.

Gulfport PD will also be patrolling the streets for trash and you can help them on their mission. They’re recruiting volunteers and to participate, show up at the leasing office of the Emerald Pine Apartment Complex for a briefing at 7:30 a.m.

This is the second of a 12-month Coast wide clean up, each month focusing on a different community.

Extend a Hand, Help a Friend CEO Jeffrey Hulum III hopes that with the clean up they can not only beautify the streets, but also redirect the broken window theory. “The broken window theory only states that if a community has broken windows with trash there’s a high probability that the community is riddled with crime, violence, and poverty. So, you can change the landscape of that community by cleaning up the community and showing you’re involved. That will also change the mental mindset of the community.”

The cleanup will last from 8 a.m. until noon and participants will be served a light lunch in exchange for their hard work.
