Cold weather shelters opening across the Coast

Now is a good time to remind you about the cold weather shelters in Harrison and Hancock counties.

More than 40 people made their way to the Kenny Fournier Multipurpose Center in D’Iberville Thursday night to escape the frigid temperatures.

Individuals are provided a cot, blanket, and a hot meal cooked and served by the Coastal Block Captains Group.

While Coast Transit Authority provides transportation to and from the shelters throughout the night, if law enforcement officers in Harrison and Jackson counties see individuals out in the cold they bring them in too.

Both cold weather shelters in Harrison County are open every night through Sunday. The Kenny Fournier Multipurpose Center opens at 4:30 p.m.

St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church on 15th Street in Gulfport opens at 5.

Over in Hancock County, their emergency management agency will open nightly until Sunday night from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. It’s located on Highway 603 in the Kiln.

For a ride to that shelter call Hancock County Dispatch at 228-255-9191.
