Cold-stunned turtles make their way to the Mississippi Aquarium

The Mississippi Aquarium picked up 40 Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles today from the airport for rehabilitation.

These turtles were shipped all the way from New England after being found stranded and cold-stunned.

When the water temperature drops, the turtles’ systems begin to shut down, causing them illness such as pneumonia.

The aquarium’s staff will take the turtles to the off-site vet clinic where they will be given full physical exams and treated for a few months until they are healthy.

They will then be released back into the Gulf. MS Aquarium Vice President of Veterinary Services Alexa Delaune said, “We are very fortunate to be able to help our colleagues up in New England, and also help all these sea turtles. As veterinarians, our job is to make animals feel better, and when we get to work with endangered species and rehabilitate them and make a difference, that makes it even better.”
