Coastwide MLK Awards honor local community activists
Awards are given to those who have changed the lives of others around them.
The Coastwide Martin Luther King Jr. Committee chose to honor local community activists along the Coast.
Nine community activists were awarded the Coastwide MLK Award. Three were chosen from each coastal county.
In Harrison County, Extend a Hand, Help a Friend CEO Jeffrey Hulum III accepted his award while organizing a community cleanup effort for MLK Day.
It takes a village to make a change and Hulum is committed to reaching out to local civic organizations to better coastal communities. “It’s not about me, it’s a collective group of all of us that come together and work together for a common goal, so I say the award is not my award, it’s a community award. We have these different organizations, these civic clubs who been doing this we just need to tap into them and do a brain dump on them and get their knowledge and information and then we can go forward.”
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Cleanup is one of dozens of community outreach events Hulum leads with volunteers to help people and communities in need.
