Coast Transit Authority opens new transit center in Gulfport

There’s a new Coast Transit Authority transit center and hub of operations in Gulfport.

The fate of the old Harrison County Library in downtown Gulfport hung in the balance for years after Hurricane Katrina nearly demolished it. But on this day, it’s time to turn the page on a new chapter and life for the old library as the Coast Transit Authority rolls out the new here. CTA Executive Director Kevin Coggin said, “It’s a great day for CTA and the community. We’re opening our brand-new Gulfport Transit Center Hub facility today. This is the hub of our bus operations that we’re moving from 15th street over to here. It’s a beautiful building.”

Four years in the works, two years in the planning and financing stage and two years in construction, not to mention COVID delays, CTA buses finally rolled out at the new site Monday. “This facility is going to support the Mississippi Aquarium. This is a perfect example of how CTA works with economic development and the economy and supporting those things. We’ve got the parking garage and the hub here. We’re going to be building a 10-million-dollar pedestrian bike/tram bridge here. We’re going to bid that out this year. It will be finished next year.”

This facility was designed around the trees that were already here and Coggin says the old library that used to be situated here will be preserved, at least in part. “We’re currently working with the Harrison County Library System. We’re trying to redevelop a library link. We’re going to have books in here and a digital library. It’s just a multi-use building.”

The final price tag when the entire project is complete will be $30 million, but Coggin says this is an investment that goes beyond dollars and cents. “The beautiful trees here, we’ve lost so much of that over the years to hurricanes. It’s really been a pleasure to reinvigorate this old building.”
