Coast schools receive National Blue Ribbon Award

Hard work has paid off for two local elementary schools as they receive national recognition today for their efforts in the classroom and beyond.

D’Iberville Elementary and Popp’s Ferry Elementary School are two of the four schools in Mississippi named Blue Ribbon Schools for 2020.

The honor recognizes schools for their overall progress in closing achievement gaps among students, bringing their skills up to grade level if they’re underperforming.

This isn’t the first time D’Iberville Elementary School has received this recognition, celebrating their first Blue Ribbon in 2009.

Principal Cindy Dusang says their success is a group effort. “The teachers and the parents work together to develop plans. When we see gaps, we call parents in, they work with us, they support their child at home, and I think I attribute it to everybody- the faculty, the staff, and our parents. And it shows them that we’re growing students, and when they put their child in our hands that we’re doing our job. We’re growing them. The teachers work very hard, everybody on the staff to make sure that each and every child and that’s why I think this award is so important, it focuses on every child, not a number.”

Students and staff at both schools were surprised with a virtual announcement in their classrooms today.

News 25 will have reaction and the full story from Popp’s Ferry Elementary School tonight on News 25.
