Coast Mayors Visit Washington to Discuss Flood Insurance Rates

High wind and flood insurance rates are something Coast residents have been dealing with since Hurricane Katrina.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes and Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich have just returned from Washington, DC where they addressed insurance issues on behalf of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Mayor Hewes tells News 25 we’re dealing with high rates that inhibit the Coast’s ability to fully rebuild from Katrina. He believes any long term fix is going to have to come from the federal government and last week’s trip was an opportunity to personally drive that point home. “It’s always good when we can go up to the nation’s capital, visiting with our delegation and really targeting members of committees that deal with flood issues was key for this visit. Having our counterparts from Biloxi join us, going together, it was kind of a good impact for them to see us talking with a unified voice,” said Mayor Hewes.
Mayor Hewes says personal visits to our nation’s capital are important if we wish to see reform on the National Flood Insurance Program.
