Coast Guard suspends search for woman who jumped from Carnival Cruise ship
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a cruise ship passenger who jumped from her balcony into the sea and is missing in the Gulf of Mexico.
Yesterday evening the Coast Guard recalled its air crews after searching since Wednesday. The 32-year-old woman was apparently getting confrontational with security and may have been handcuffed when she leapt from the ship’s upper deck.
A cell phone video showed that confrontation and further video showed a crowd of onlookers peering into the water after her fall. U.S Coast Guard Public Affairs Officer Carlos Galarza said, “Rescue crews searched more than 2,514 square miles for a combined search time of 14 hours approximately. Pending further developments, as far as what those developments may be, it may differentiate. It may be something that would resume a search, but pending further developments, yes, the search is suspended.”
The ship arrived at its home port of New Orleans on Thursday morning after a cruise to Mexico.
