Clear the Shelters adoption drive at Jackson County Animal Shelters

There were a lot of happy faces at the Jackson County Animal Shelter on Saturday as many people found new friends.

Saturday was no ordinary day at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. People crowded the shelter throughout the day to participate in ‘Clear the Shelters,’ a nationwide event held at many shelters across the country. WXXV News 25 partnered with the Jackson County Animal Shelter to find homes for animals in their care. Adoption Coordinator Maridee Mallette said, “It is unconditional love that you can’t get from just, you know, when you buy a puppy. These babies know that they’re getting out of a cage and then they get to go home with you and you get to love them and it’s very rewarding.”

The shelter typically receives 450 to 600 new animals a month, putting the shelter well over capacity. “We’re usually over capacity because we don’t want to have to euthanize. So, we keep more than we should, but we have enough people here to take care of them. We do the best we can to get them adopted. So, we might as well stay at capacity and over.”

After it was all said and done, 76 animals at the shelter found new homes as a result of the event. Max the hound was one of those animals. His new owner, JJ Smith, says the adoption experience is a great one. “Oh, it’s awesome. I’m just glad I could help the dog out. I mean, he makes me happy and hopefully I can make him happy,” said Smith.

The fact that so many animals found new homes comes as a big welcome to Mallette. “It makes my heart feel good. Monday is going to be so much easier because we’ll have less pets here. I say everybody keep up the good work and come adopt.”

Making a difference in the lives of our furry friends is why many made the choice to adopt. “Everybody’s helpful. The animals are pretty nice. They give you a nice opportunity to get to meet all the animals before you bring them home.”
