City of Biloxi preparing for Scrapin the Coast

BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV)- Thousands of custom vehicles and automotive enthusiasts are expected to take over the Coast Coliseum this weekend for one of the biggest car show events.

From lifted trucks and low riders to custom builds packed with horsepower and personality, the 24th annual Scrapin the Coast returns to Biloxi for a three-day weekend. Officials say preparations have been underway for months. Lt. Matthew Jalanivich with Biloxi PD said, “We’ll start preparing our operational plan, which consists of all the logistics, where the manpower needs to be, helping outside agencies, and getting them to come out and assist because we do expect a lot of traffic. We’re expecting an extra 50 to 100 thousand people for the event. Traffic is usually jammed up on Highway 90, so we’ll put our cones out that way we can get emergency vehicles up and down if we need to. As far as the department, we just ask the people to come in here and follow all the traffic laws. Make sure you park legally and have a good time.”

To help with traffic, the Coast Transit Authority will implement adjusted bus service and a special express route between the Gulfport and Biloxi transit. While the extra traffic may frustrate some, others say it’s all part of the experience. Resident London Adams said, “I’m looking forward to looking at all the great vehicles come back, all the jacked-up trucks, and the low squatted vehicles. My favorite thing is the stereo systems, just driving down and most people aren’t the biggest fan of the traffic. For me, I like the traffic because I get to show off my stereo to all the people on side of the road.”

In addition to the custom vehicle showcase, attendees can expect popular attractions including hydraulic and stereo competitions throughout the weekend.

Officials also remind visitors that Mississippi’s squatted vehicle law remains in effect as they work to keep the event safe and enjoyable for everyone.
